Why it matters
Small loss differences, multiplied across a whole fleet
A single distribution transformer is small next to a power transformer, but utilities and OEMs buy them by the thousand — so a core-loss difference of a few hundredths of a watt per kilogram compounds into a real fleet-wide energy cost. Unlike a GSU or large power unit where no-load loss dominates, distribution transformers cycle with daily demand, so both no-load loss (constant, 24/7) and load loss (varies with draw) matter to the total-owning-cost evaluation utilities run when awarding volume contracts.
Efficiency regulation drives the spec directly: US DOE 10 CFR 431 sets minimum efficiency levels for liquid-immersed and dry-type distribution transformers sold in the US, and the EU Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 548/2014 sets Tier 1/Tier 2 core-loss ceilings for the European market. Both push standard CRGO cores toward tighter loss control, and push premium lines toward Hi-B grades or thinner gauges to clear the higher tier with margin.

Which CRGO grade is right for distribution transformers?
Standard M4–M6 (27Q120–30Q140) covers most pole- and pad-mounted production. If your efficiency tier or a loss-weighted utility contract calls for a lower core loss, step up to Hi-B grades like 23ZH90.
Do you supply for pole-mounted, pad-mounted and dry-type units?
Yes — the same CRGO grades cover all three; the difference is mainly in form (coil, cut sheet or stamped lamination) and thickness rather than the steel family itself.
Can your steel meet DOE 10 CFR 431 or EU Ecodesign efficiency requirements?
